Mérida, Mexico — The “Barrio Mágico” of San Sebastián is set to host the ninth edition of the Feria del Mucbipollo, a cornerstone celebration of the Yucatecan Hanal Pixán (Day of the Dead) season. The event, which serves as a centerpiece of the 2026 Festival de las Ánimas, will take place on Sunday, October 25, at the neighborhood’s main park.
Organizers expect a turnout of more than 20,000 people between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. The fair will feature 18 vendors showcasing a variety of the region’s signature dish. Attendees can sample diverse iterations of mucbipollo, ranging from the traditional pib de relleno negro to popular variations featuring castacán and cochinita.
For those looking to feast, prices are expected to range from 900 pesos for a large container (lata) to approximately 115–120 pesos for individual slices, providing options for both family gatherings and casual sampling during the festivities.
Karla Berrón Cámara, Director of Identity and Culture for the Mérida City Council, emphasized that the festival has become one of the most significant expressions of Hanal Pixán. She noted that the mucbipollo is more than just a culinary staple; it is a profound link to Yucatecan roots and a way to honor the memory of the deceased. The fair, which originated as a grassroots citizen initiative, has evolved into a major cultural milestone that strengthens community ties.
Father Lorenzo Mex, the parish priest of San Sebastián, also invited the public to join the festivities, highlighting the event’s role in preserving local customs. Reflecting on the fair’s nine-year history in the parish, he noted the importance of such gatherings in building a vibrant, united community.
